| The three-act drama Teahouse is the representative work of Lao She’s realistic drama and one of the most outstanding works in the history of Chinese contemporary drama.Compared with Lao She’s other drama works after the founding of the People’s Republic of China,Teahouse has become a classical work of Chinese Literature in 1949-1966 with its profound thought and unique artistry. From Three Brothers of Qin to three versions of Teahouse,Lao She kept on balancing the norms of socialist literature and self-artistic practice. The version history of Teahouse is also the spiritual history that Lao She struggled in the norms of socialist literature and his own artistic individuality and creation demand. It can be said that the birth of Teahouse, thanks to the relatively lenient political environment, and is also the result of Lao She’s self-creation adjustment in the identity transformation from an old Beijing man to the people’s artist.Based on the background of the creation context of Chinese Literature in1949-1966 and the transformation of Lao She’s literary concept after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, this paper comprehensively analyzes the evolution process of the versions from Three Brothers of Qin to three editions of Teahouse, and explores Lao She’s view of history and culture. From Three Brothers of Qin to Teahouse,Lao She narrowed the vast social environment to a teahouse, reflecting historical changes with the life experience of the old Beijing citizen group.Because of the loose dramatic structure and the lack of just characters and contradiction in text,Teahouse has deviated from the standardized historical logic to a certain extent and has been criticized by all walks of life.Under the influence of the atmosphere of the times,Lao She added a small amount of details of political metaphor to the later two versions to seek the balance between the artistic value and the political height of the text. However,it can’t reverse the low narrative tone of the text, nor can it change the fate of its criticism. The creation of Teahouse is the practice of Lao She returning to the theme of old things. In the text,Lao She no longer completely negates the cultural tradition from the cultural standpoint of New Beijing, but reappears the historicalprocess in which the traditional culture of old Beijing is gradually marginalized under the impact of the new political system, economic system and ideological culture in the process of constructing a modern country through the rise and fall of Yutai teahouse from the perspective of the old era.Lao She enriched the ideological connotation of Teahouse with his unique view of history and complex culture, which made it different from most literary works of the same period, and showed unique aesthetic value. |
