The classics need to be passed on,and the adaptation practice is a way of critical inheritance with the vitality of the times.With the increasing prevalence of the cultural phenomenon of adaptation practice,Linda Hutcheon’s A Theory of Adaptation,which is regarded as a theoretical guide in this field,is also becoming more valuable.It is the development direction of the current adaptation practice to analyze the adapted works from the perspective of theory and to find out and put forward new problems in view of the combination of research theory and adaptation works.The purpose of this paper is to analyze the adaptations of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew by using Hutcheon’s adaptation theory,and to discuss the adaptation motives,the characteristics of the adaptation mode and the desirability and direction of cross-cultural adaptation based the analysis of its localization in China.The thesis consists of five parts.The first part is the introduction,which mainly expounds the background information,the literary review of academic research at home and abroad and the theoretical framework.The main body is divided into three chapters: the first chapter illustrates the adaptation motive of The Taming of the Shrew from four angles in order to analyze the reasons for its perpetual adaptation;the second chapter analyzes the adaptation transformation from text to drama from Hutcheon’s showing mode,and then discusses the adaptation strategies of The Taming of the Shrew;In the third chapter,through two case studies,the author explains the current situation of the Sinicization of The Taming of the Shrew,and further extends to the discussion of crosscultural adaptation.The last part is the conclusion and the summary of the thesis.By excavating and analyzing The Taming of the Shrew from the perspective of Hutcheon’s adaptation theory,the author argues that under the trend of cultural globalization,the classical literature works can display their openness and shine more brightly through adaptation in the era of mass media.
