| Doris Lessing(1919-2013)is a well-known contemporary British woman writer,the winner of Nobel Prize in Literature and other awards.Since the publication of her first novel "Grass Singing" in 1950,she has achieved fruitful creative results.Looking at all Lessing’s works,we can find her concern about social reality.Almost every work of Lessing is permeated with her exploration and Reflection on social issues,and her short stories are no exception.Whether in the early short stories reflecting the life of African colonies or in the middle and late short stories exposing the social problems of Britain,racial oppression and gender discrimination are the dilemmas that Lessing’s heroes often encounter.In her short stories,Lessing,through highlighting the issues of race and gender,depicts in sharp style the conflicts and influences,antagonism and integration between white colonists and black slaves,and between men and women.This paper focuses on the close reading of the text,combines the relevant theories and knowledge of Literary Ethics and feminism,and takes the four aspects of ecological ethics,gender ethics,social ethics and human ethics as the breakthrough point.By exploring the ethical problems between human and nature,human and society,and human and self revealed in Lessing’s short stories,it tries to clarify the ethical connotation and the ethical content of Lessing’s short stories.The value of the times and the author’s value pursuit and ethical thoughts are explored,and then Lessing’s short story creation thoughts and artistic characteristics which spanned more than half a century are investigated in an all-round way.This paper includes three parts: introduction,theme and conclusion.The introduction part mainly elaborates the writing significance of this article.Firstly,it introduces the reasons for writing this article,based on Lessing’s outstanding ethical and moral concern in his short stories.Then,it makes a comprehensive comment on Lessing’s literary creation at home and abroad.Finally,the research methods and significance of this paper are introduced.The main part of the article includes four chapters.In the first chapter,from theperspective of man and nature,the ecological ethics in Lessing’s early African short stories is analyzed,and Lessing’s ecological ethics is summarized.Lessing regards society as composed of men and women,so in the second and third chapters of this paper,the ethical relationship between man and society is studied from the perspective of Gender Ethics and social ethics.In the second chapter,the ethical relationship between the sexes in marriage is analyzed.Lessing expresses her ethical appeal for gender harmony by portraying men and women in marriage dilemma.In the third chapter,the relationship between the protagonist in Lessing’s short stories and the social ethical environment is investigated.Individual survival and development are carried out in a certain social ethical environment,which is dependent on and constrained by the social ethical environment.Lessing,by describing the living conditions of vulnerable groups in a specific social context,shows the individual’s struggle for freedom and independence in the confinement of social reality.In the last chapter,the ethical relationship between man and self in Lessing’s short stories is investigated from the perspective of human ethics.In Lessing’s view,the ethical relationship between man and self is very complex.Only by breaking through the shackles of self and accurately positioning and identifying oneself,can one correctly understand oneself and build a harmonious relationship between man and oneself.The concluding part summarizes the viewpoints of the full text.The author believes that Lessing’s ecological ethics,gender ethics,social ethics and human nature ethics advocated in her short stories have distinct characteristics of the times and personal color,which is Lessing’s protest against racial discrimination and gender discrimination under the colonial background.Lessing’s harmonious construction of ethical relations between man and nature,man and society,and man and self in her short stories is her harmonious reconstruction of the conflict of civilizations and the split order of the world. |
