An E-C Translation Report On Theft By Finding:Diaries (1977-2002)(1991-1992)

With the deepening of cultural exchanges between China and other countries,foreign books are increasingly welcomed by Chinese readers.However,diaries are rare in the market.There are few studies on diary translation.To fill this gap,this report takes the book Theft by Finding: Diaries(1977-2002)written by David Sedaris as an example to discuss diary translation.This task has a large number of words,so it is completed in the form of groupwork.In this E-C translation report,the translator discusses her translated version of the sections 1991 and 1992,whose source text are contended in the book Theft by Finding: Diaries(1977-2002).This paper focuses on the contents from 1991 to 1992 as the object of case study,analyses the characteristics of diary,the writer's language style and the difficulties,and explores the translation theories and methods the translator adopts in this translation practice.This translation report is guided by the theories of Reception Theory and Thick Translation.This report discusses how to use transliteration,literal translation,rewriting and other translation methods to achieve the accuracy and fluency of the translated version,and conform to the expression of the target language readers,which can be accepted by them.The report shows that: 1.Pre-translation preparation is indispensable.The adequacy of preparation directly affects the quality of the translation.2.When translating the source text,translators should always stand on the position of the target language readers and use the customary expression of the target language readers so that they can get the same reading experience as the source language readers.3.Keep the style of the source text as far as possible.Diary usually reflects the writer's personal styles of the source text,which are also the attractions of the diary.Therefore,when translating diaries,the writer of the source text should be respected as much as possible in order to preserve the flavor of the source text.Finally,the translator hopes that the Chinese version of Theft by Finding:Diaries(1977-2002)will be published as soon as possible with the help of my supervisor and my classmates,the translator also hopes that this translation report will inspire future generations.
