In order to explore the influence of the Dark Personality Traits on middle school students' depression and the role of bullying level.A research was conducted by using a combination of horizontal and vertical surveys to investigate the middle school students in China.This study consists of two parts.The horizontal study came as the Study 1,using the Chinese version of the Dark Triad Scale(Dirty Dozen,DD),the Olweus Children's Bullying Questionnaire and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale(CES-D).In the perspective of horizontal scale,this research examined the static relationship between the dark triad of the middle school students,the level of school bullying and depression;that is,whether the mediation model of the middle school students being bullied exists between the dark triad and depression or not.The survey used the convenient sampling method to select students from grade one to grade three in three different middle schools in Guizhou Province as the research objects.A total of 1,200 questionnaires were distributed and 1,063 of them were collected.After removing the invalid questionnaires,1002 valid questionnaires were obtained with 94.26% of the effective rate.Study 2 is a longitudinal study.Using the same questionnaire and scale as in Study 1,a one-semester follow-up survey in the grade one students is conducted from a vertical perspective in order to further verify that whether the mediation role is still valid between these three.This study used the same method in Study 1 to select the first-year freshmen from three different middle schools in Guizhou Province as the research objects to conduct a follow-up survey.The study lasted for four months and a total of four tests were conducted on the grade one students in 2018.The first test was arranged within one week after the freshmen enrolled,a total of 689 questionnaires were distributed,687 questionnaires were returned,and 657 of them valid with the effective rate of 95.63%.The subsequent three tests were carried out by means of a concentrated test at intervals of four weeks.After analyzing the data by using the model of latent variable growth model,the results show that: Study 1(1)The dark triad is significantly and positively correlated with bully victim;(2)The dark triad is significantly and positively correlated with depression;(3)There is a significant positive correlation between bully victim and depression.(4)Using the method of bias correction percentile Bootstrap sampling 5000 times,the mediation effect test found that the dark triad of middle school students can not only directly predict the depression level of individuals,but also indirectly predict the level of depression in individuals through the level of school bullying.As for the Study 2:(1)There is a linear increase in the bully victim.Its initial level and its subsequent growth rate have significant interindividual differences;(2)The depression has the same linear growth as bully victim,and its initial level is as significant as its subsequent growth rate which mentioned above;(3)The dark triad can significantly predict the initial level of bully victim in the grade one student;(4)The dark triad can significantly predict the initial level and growth rate of depression;(5)the intercept of the being bullying indicates that there is a partial mediation between the dark triad and depression.Overall,this research showed that the higher the level of the dark triad,the higher the level of bully victim,which led to an increase in the level of depression among those students.This discovery not only deepens the study of personality trait theory,but also deepens the functional research of the dark triad,and also promotes the academic understanding of the relationship between bullying and depression.In addition,based on the results of this study,for the mental health education of middle school students,we should focus on reducing the incidence of school bullying to reduce the level of depression in individuals in order to ensure a healthy development of middle school students.
