A Report On The Translation Of American Wolf(Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

The source text in this translation report is selected from Chapter one and Chapter two of a nonfiction literature work American Wolf that is published in 2017.This book is written by an American writer Nate Blakeslee who discusses the relationship between man and nature by virtue of the real historical event that wolves were reintroduced into Yellow Stone Park in 1995,showing the strong social realistic significance.In recent years,nonfiction literature is prosperous in different countries around the world.Each year,a large amount of nonfiction literature has been published in China,including local nonfiction literatures and foreign ones that are introduced by translation.After looking up relevant literatures and references,the translator has realized that fewer studies on nonfiction literature translation have been done now.Therefore,the translator hopes that this translation report on the translation of American Wolf under the guidance of skopos theory could make some contributions to the study on nonfiction literature translation.As the core theory of functionalist theory,skopos theory has been put forward by Hans J.Vermeer,the main idea of which is that the translator should take the target readers into consideration in the translation process.In order to achieve a better target text,translators should follow three primary rules: skopos rule,coherence rule,and fidelity rule.It is widely believed that the skopos theory is suitable to guide the translation of non-literary texts.Therefore,the translator expects to prove the applicability of the skopos theory on the nonfiction literature translation.Four chapters are included in the report: the task description,process description,case analysis,and conclusion.According to the contexts,different translation methods are adopted during the translation process,such as annotation,recasting,embedding,and division and so on to deal with the translation difficulties like translation of proper nouns and compound sentences to achieve the goals of improving the readability of the target text and representing the features and style of the source text.
