In liaison interpreting, due to interpreter directly participating in the face-to-face communication, the conversation is relatively spontaneous and unpredictable. Therefore, the role of the interpreter is no longer invisible as it is in conference interpreting.Based on actual experiences, the author found that interpreters often need to participate in the filtered process, rather than word-to-word translate all messages.Questions like whether the interpreter can filter some information, what kind of information needs to be filtered, what factors affect the filtered process, how to filter the message, and whether the quality of the translation after filtering is eligible, etc.have become the main focus of the author’s research. The specific research material of this thesis is based on the author’s own experience at Hunan Normal University interpreting for the education officials from Confucius Institute at Southern Utah University. In this practice report, the author attempts to explore filtered process in liaison interpreting, collects the theoretical base of interpreter’s visibility and interpreting filters, analyzes actual cases occurred in the event, and proposes four interpreter-mediated approaches of omission, partial modification(modification in language style),adaptation(changes on the level of meaning)and explanation. The author also summarizes the innovation and improvement of the paper in hopes of providing some reference for future interpreters.
