| Turkish ice-cream has been very popular in China recently. The reason is simple. With economic development,Chinese people has started to enjoy new and fresh foreign cultures, becoming more and more open and inclusive. Some of them find the way of selling Turkish ice-cream very interesting while others are attracted by its taste. It is common that laborers in a country come from all over the world. However,a majority of these foreigners who live abroad to earn moneys know neither the local language nor the local culture. They just come for money. And that is exactly the reason why I decided to film ‘Turkish Ice-Cream Makers’ :they work in China, without knowledge of language or culture, not used to diet customs, living alone far from home on a very structured schedule-go to work in the morning and go home at night.I got to know Abdullah because we were from the same country.I chose to film him not only because making Turkish ice-cream is a performance delivering happiness, but also because Abdullah is an unhappy person who makes others happy, which is contradictory.Through his story, people can have a view of how a foreigner adapted himself to and developed an affinity for the life in China,as well as how two Turkish influence each other.Learning from many excellent documentaries,I’ve found that documentaries are also telling stories, the conflicts of the characters, and the process of characters solving problems. This made me to go deeper to the life of Abdullah and Yusuf,to observe it,from which I captured the loneliness and emptiness of master Abdullah and his desire to blend into Chinese life, and to record this process.Documentaries should be artless and simple. Therefore,I will try to cover up the techniques I used and to immerse the audience in the work. |
