In Conversation Analysis, formulation refers to the responsive action of proposing a version of what has been said by the other interlocutor previously. It is a kind of powerful communicative tool particularized in institutional settings in that it can be used to accomplish institutional tasks. Moreover, its specific functionality varies from institution to institution. Therefore, abundant research has been conducted to identify what they can do in various institutional settings within the theoretical framework of Conversation Analysis.Despite fruitful findings on the functional aspects of formulations in different settings, prior research has rarely dealt with the issue of how formulation is formed, which is an equally important aspect of formulation. Therefore, the present study attempts to take into consideration the issues of both how formulation is formed and of what they can do in the TV mediation shows with special reference to Gold Medal Mediation.Due to the limitations of Conversation Analysis in investigating the linguistic meanings and design of formulation, the present study adopts the theoretical framework of Socio-pragmatic Approach complemented by Conversation Analysis to explore the linguistic and functional aspects of formulation.SCA proposes that communication is a process subject to the interplay between cooperation and egocentrism.Interlocutors are not only cooperative but also egocentric in meaning construction and interpretation. It is assumed that formulation is a conversational phenomenon resulted from the interplay between cooperation and egocentrism in the course of communication since it is a candidate understanding of other interlocutors' accounts. As the analysis shows, formulations in this setting display features of cooperation and egocentrism to varying degree.According to the absence or presence of emergent feature, formulations can be divided into two types: prone-cooperative formulations and prone-egocentric formulations.Prone-cooperative formulations are used to accurately represent or agreeably extend clients' accounts, which function to show support or promote mutual understanding and mitigate conflicting force.Proneegocentric formulations are used to provide a different or opposite version of clients' account, which work to offer another perspective for clients to look at some aspects of their problems or to challenge their account and find their fault or responsibility in leading to disputes or conflicts. All these formulations serve as a foundation facilitating the proposition of suggestions.
