We study the modal expressions of "gan" in three aspects of modern Chinese,Chinese dialects and ancient Chinese,and build the semantic system of the modal expressions of "gan".It benefits the comprehensive exploration of the modal expressions of "gan".In modern Chinese,we study the modal expressions of "gan" from the semantic and pragmatic function.We make the semantic and modal functions analysis of the modal expressions of "gan" combined with dictionary definition and corpus.In the pragmatic function,we research the stylistic distribution and information functions,and find that they are mainly distributed in spoken language.The informative function includes the focus salience,suspicion,adding euphemism to sentences,and the interpersonal function.In Chinese dialects,we discussed the distribution and semantic function of the modal expressions of "gan" in dialect areas.They distribute in northern dialect,Jin dialect and Min dialect.Their basic semantics and usage are roughly corresponding in these dialects.In terms of geographical distribution,the modal expressions of "gan" has an absolute advantage in the northern region.In ancient Chinese,we analyze the semantic evolution of the modal expressions of "gan".From the development path of “gan”,the development mechanism is both of metaphor and metonymy.Finally,we investigate the development process of the other modal expressions of "gan".On the opinion of us,the formation and development of the modal expressions of "gan" are closely related to the development of "gan".Moreover,the semantic meaning and frequency of the modal expressions of "gan" are diverse in different time periods.It reflects the continuous self-regulation of Chinese vocabulary under the principle of language economy.
