The Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties were the main historical period in which Buddhism was imported into China. As a foreign culture,Buddhism continued to enter. And the foreign monks, who were one of the main subjects of cultural communication also entered the Chinese society. As a special cultural group, the foreign monks were mainly from the Indian and Western Buddhist culture circles. They entered C hina through the silk road, and were concentrated in the Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties. They were active in various political centers and transportation hubs.During that period, the group of foreign monks injected new intellectual resources for the development of C hinese Buddhist culture and even C hinese culture.Regrettably, the research on foreign monks is still based on case studies, and its group research has not been fully paid attention to in today’s academic circles. The combination of research methods such as history, religion and sociology is conducive to breaking through the case study paradigm that emphasizes the prominent role of individual figures in the history of Chinese Buddhism, and provides a new perspective on the history of early Buddhism development. In this regard, this paper attempts to break through the limitations of the study of individual individuals, such as investigating the overall spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the group, the fate of preach, and paying attention to its social interactions after entering China and the language dilemma in communication.According to the research, during the Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties, the input of Buddhist culture was directly input from the Indian cultural circle and indirectly through the transit area of the Western Region Cultural Circle.During this period, the number of outsiders in china was uneven in the north and south, and the number of people grew at the peak from the early 5th century. Moreover, its mobility in C hina is not strong. And it is concentrated in the social centers of Luoyang,Jiankang,Chang’an.In these places, the group of foreign monks carried out pluralistic social interactions with other ruling classes, intellectuals,Chinese Buddhist monks, businessmen, women and other groups. At that time, they strived to overcome language difficulties, and formed a distinctive Chinese language learning activity.Unfortunately, under the influence of the character and the degree of relevance between doctrine and society, the foreign monks’ preaching were not smooth. However, the coming of the group of foreign monks still has the significance, like completing C hinese cultural structure, continuing the history of Chinese Buddhism, and providing experience about religious culture diplomacy and human cultural exchange.
