The Contemporary Significance Of Bonian Ren's Portrait Study

Chinese portraits have a long history of development.Dating back to the early Shang Dynasty,and developed into an independent painting class at Song Dynasty.After the Opium War of the Qing Dynasty,however,Chinese traditional portraits had been a decline in the trend due to the advancement of photography and the introduction of Western realist portraits.Bonian Ren can grasp the pulse of the times and innovate in inheritance.He constantly learned and absorbed the excellent artistic techniques and concepts of Chinese and foreign,and created an artistic style that combines Chinese and Western art and taste,thus breaking the bottleneck of the development of Chinese portraits.His painting style reflects the characteristics of the times and the spirits of innovation.His artistic works and concepts have played a huge guiding role in the development and transformation of the subsequent figure paintings,helping to solve the practical problems faced by portraits.Nowadays,with the decline of traditional literati paintings but the flourishing development of academic paintings,portraits present many problems in shaping and expressiveness.For example,excessive sketching results in the weakness of traditional lines and the lack of pen and ink.The study of portraits of Bonian Ren might help to solve such problems.This paper first gives a brief introduction to Chinese portraits and their development.Secondly,it analyzes the status and achievements of Bonian Ren in the portrait world,and the historical context and represent subjects of his paintings.Finally,elaborated the significance of his portraits to the contemporary and the influence on the future generations,and use the essence of Bonian Ren's artistic thought to explore the solution to the problems faced by current portraits.
