The translation practice,The Opium Trade,is the work of Nathan Allen,an American social reformer. After it came out in 1850,The Opium Trade aroused extensive attention, which was thus reprinted in 1853.Focusing on its social impact,The Opium Trade at large shows the cultivation of the opium,as well as its trade, the antiquity of the poppy, its crude state and the history of the opium trade. What's more, the work in detail reveals how Chinese people and its society suffer from the opium trade, its comprehensive facts and accuracy outstripping many other parallel texts. Its historical value cannot be ignored,as opium in modern history is closely associated with China. Thus the Chinese translation of The Opium Trade not only imparts knowledge that how the society changes, but also urges people to draw the lesson from the century of humiliation, ringing an alarm bell for the modern society.According to Newmark's text type theory,The Opium Trade serves as the information text, historical information about the opium production and trade being overloaded. Therefore, long English sentences are common, including compound sentence, complex sentence and absolute construction.Furthermore, what constitutes them are coordinator, conjunctive adverb, attribute clause, adverbial clause, noun clause and etc. Thus,in the source text semantic relationships linking different clauses rely on cohesion devices, according to Halliday and Hasan including grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion, which are applicable to both Chinese and English;the former consists of reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. However,as there is no entirely corresponding relationship,English and Chinese differ in their usage, frequency, classification and etc.As the translator values accuracy, complete information flow and conciseness, the report tries to explore the strategies of translating cohesion devices of English clauses.Various strategies including literal translation, adaptation and omission, are employed. The report is divided into five parts. The first part is the task description introducing the author, the source text and its significance, and the selection of the parallel text. The second part focuses on process description, which consists of four sub-sections,including dictionaries, the CAT tools, the schedule of translation practice and quality-control methods. The third part analyzes the source text in terms of English sentence structure, cohesion devices as well as their different employment in English and Chinese. The fourth part shows case studies of cohesion devices, exploring the translation strategies. The last part concludes the whole report, enumerating various translation strategies for cohesion devices in the source text.
