On Transference Of Narrative Point Of View In The English Translation Of Ah-Q Zheng Zhuan

Novels,with their unique narration,play an important part in the literature.The translation of novels is one of the important tools to promote the cultural exchange between China and foreign countries.Narrative point of view is an extremely important narrative strategy in novels,especially in modern novels,and is a bridge that connects various narrative forms.Many translators devote to discuss the issue of narrative point of view and pay attention to the transference of narrative point of view in the translation of novels.This thesis,from the perspective of Narratology,studies the transference of narrative point of view in the English translation of Ah-Q Zheng Zhuan.This thesis,with Narratology as a theoretical tool and Ah-Q Zheng Zhuan translated by Yang Xianyi and Julian Lovell as research objects,explores the transference of narrative point of view in the English translation of Ah-Q Zheng Zhuan.Based on the comparative study of Yang Xianyi’s and Julian Lovell’s English translations,this paper explores the characteristics of Yang Xianyi’s and Julian Lovell’s narrative strategies,the differences and similarities between the two translations in terms of the transference of narrative point of view,and discusses the reasons that cause these differences and similarities.Based on the theoretical framework of Genette and Shen Dan,this paper makes a comparative study of the narrative point of view in the original text and the translations,as well as the two translations.By collecting the number of the transference of narrative narrative in the original text and the variation number of the transference of narrative narrative in the two translations,the author obtains the following findings:(1)In general,Ah-Q Zheng Zhuan uses an omniscient narrative point of view,the transference of which mainly includes three kinds of types: pure character’s point of view,multiple point of view and cross-border point of view.Both in Yang Xianyi’s text and in Julian Lovell’s text,the variation number of multiple point of view and cross-border point of view account for the most percentage.However,there are fewer variations in Yang’ Xianyi’s text compared with that in Julian Lovell’s text.(2)In the process of dealing with the transference of the narrative point of view,the translators’ translation strategies are closely related to their translation views.Yang Xianyi mainly adopts the foreignization translation strategy while Julian Lovell mainly adopts the domestication translation strategy.Yang Xianyi’s translation view is centered on the principle of “faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance”,putting much emphasis on the original-oriented translation and trying to represent the narrative style of the original text.Julian Lovell obeys the principle of “faithful recreation”,putting much emphasis on the reader-oriented translation and attaching great importance to the fluency of the translation and readers’ reading experience.Through the study of the transference of narrative point of view in the English translation of Ah-Q Zheng Zhuan,this paper reveals the different narrative strategies adopted by the different translators in the process of the translation of novels and the reasons behind it,which can serve as a reference for the whole fiction translation and the study of theories of the translation of novels.
