Visual Fault Tolerance In Modern Font Design

Under the environment of “font ecology”,in front of the constant evolution of information media and communication ways,the important information design language of font carries the social responsibilities of visual transmission and presentation,brand construction,and life aesthetics,etc.The visual image of font glyphs affects the effect of font information transmission to a certain extent.The interdisciplinary concept will bring a complete new guiding methodology for the theory and practice of modern font design.Through the study of some literatures,it is found that the concept of fault tolerance in the philosophy and science field can also be applied to the field of font design research.This thesis is meant to bring the “fault-tolerant” thinking into the modern font design research,in order to analyze the experimental attempt and discussion for the multi-angle visual representation of font glyphs.Make the font more personalized and interesting by digging into the diversified application value of visual fault tolerance in font design.The thesis mainly uses the literature research method,case analysis method,inductive deduction method and other research methods,through the methodologies summarized from articles and analysis on some cases,combining with my own design practices,to fully demonstrate the thesis arguments.The main content of this thesis is divided into four parts: firstly,it briefly explains related concepts of fault tolerance,visual fault tolerance and font design,as well as the potential relationship between visual fault tolerance and font design.Then it expounds that the western thought "fault tolerance" still applies in the word-making method of "Six Categories" of Chinese characters.The relationship between the word-making method and fault-tolerance contained in the "Six Categories" will be redefined.After that,combine with the principle of visual perception further to analyze the recognition characteristics of the font,and the deconstructive vision treatment of the font modularization.The visual fault-tolerant performance in font design is analyzed with some cases;The last part focuses on the author's design practice based on the topic discussion,of which the content applies visual fault-tolerant thinking to the font design practice of “Accompany with You the Convenience Store”,combining with the design works to expound it from three parts of the brand logo,posters and other extension applications,finally induce and summarize the methodologies discussed in the previous paper and design practices.As an important part of language,font is the carrier of cultural communication,which represents the aesthetics of people at present,and contains the emotions behind it as well.Therefore,it is more and more important to study the thinking and methods of font design.In this thesis,a new interpretation of "fault tolerance" concept in the field of philosophy and science is endowed in the font design field,which provides theoretical support for the design method of font under the background of the font design being increasingly graphic,and at the same time construct the specific informational taste and visual beauty font,through the constant "trial and error" in the process of font design practice,to provide a more open guiding meaning for font design.
