| In October 2013,President Xi Jinping of China proposed the establishment of “Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank”(AIIB),which has won worldwide attention since then. And as a result, western countries are rush to join the new bank. However, concerns and doubts have accompanied along the way.Due to the misguidance of foreign mass media,it’s difficult for western society to have an objective knowledge of the AIIB.This study aims to conduct a contrastive analysis between Chinese and American media to unveil ideological implications of the reports about the AIIB.It combines together the quantitative approach with the qualitative approach, which are separately achieved by Corpus Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis. In order to identify elements of stance in the news, two corpora are constructed and keywords are retrieved and compared respectively from the American News Corpus(ANC)and Chinese News Corpus(CNC).At the same time, the concordance lines of “AIIB” are also analyzed in detail for more results, which are divided into three groups, including lines without stance, lines with positive and negative stance. Results show that the image of AIIB is portrayed differently by Chinese and American media.Firstly, the main focus and topic coverage of these two countries’ media differ from each other greatly.Secondly, the skills they adopt to express their voices are opposite. In the CNC,more positive stances are presented explicitly while more negative stances are presented implicitly in the ANC.The reasons are then explored, including their discursive strategies and socio-ideological context. It is hoped that this study can provide certain reference significance for understanding the differences between Chinese and American media,as well as certain enlightenment for cultivating students’ critical awareness. |
