The ontological research and application research of measure words have always been a hot topic in the field of modern Chinese research and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(TCSOL),however, study on the collocation of individual classifiers and abstract nouns is rare. This thesis is an attempt to explore it in detail,in the hope of supplementing the ontological study of measure words and helping the teaching of measure words in TCSOL.The thesis consists of three parts:The first part is literature review,in which relevant researches are sorted out, including the classification of measure words and abstract nouns, the definition of individual classifiers and abstract nouns, and the collocation of measure words and abstract nouns. The review sets the context of the research. The second part is the quantitative statistics, which sorts out and describes the collocation of individual classifiers and abstract nouns in The Syllabus of the Graded Vocabulary for HSK.Then some rules are drawn out and a diachronic, cognitive explanation is made of the reasons for the collocation of individual classifiers and abstract nouns. The third part is an analysis of the errors that occur in the acquisition of such collocations.Learners' collocation errors of individual classifiers and abstract nouns are classified and analyzed, and then some teaching suggestions are put forward as to how to efficiently carry out the teaching and learning of such collocations in the course of TCSOL.This thesis finds that the underlying reason for abstract nouns to be matched with individual classifiers is the semantic similarity and correlation,or the semantic similarity and correlation between abstract nouns and prototype members that can be matched with individual quantifier phrases. When abstract nouns are matched with individual classifiers, they are individualized, and, like the substantive nouns, cause their meaning to be internally discrete.Such semantic similarity and correlation of individual classifiers and abstract noun phrases should and can be applied to the practice of TCSOL.
