English vocabulary learning strategies are one of the research hotspots in recent years.The study on English vocabulary learning strategies for junior middle school students is one of them.However,it is found that few researchers paid attention to the English vocabulary learning strategies of junior middle school students in minority areas.Sichuan Province,where the author is located,is the largest Yi minority settlement in China.Therefore,this thesis is to explore the use of English vocabulary learning strategies for junior middle school students in Yi minority areas.Based on the second-language vocabulary acquisition theories,namely,are involvement load hypothesis by Laufer and Hulstijn and levels of processing by Craik and Lockhart,this study researched on 204 junior middle school students from 4 classes of Xinlin Middle School in Ebian Yi Autonomous County,Leshan City,Sichuan Province.Through the use of English vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire,English vocabulary test by Nation & Beglar(2007),and interview questionnaire,this study intends to seek answers for the following four questions: 1)What is the overall picture of the use of English vocabulary strategies for junior middle school students in the Yi minority areas ? 2)Are there any differences in the use of four vocabulary strategies between junior middle school students whose mother tongue is Yi language or Chinese? 3)Are there any differences in the use of four vocabulary strategies between junior middle school male and female student in the Yi minority areas? 4)Is students' vocabulary size related to their use of vocabulary learning strategies?The data were processed by SPSS22.0 and Excel.Through descriptive statistical analysis,Pearson chi-square test,Spearman correlation coefficient analysis,the results of the study are as follows: 1)The overallfrequency of using English vocabulary learning strategies by junior middle school students in Yi minority areas is low,and the frequency of using four English vocabulary learning strategies ranked from high to low is regulation strategies,cognitive strategies,social/affective strategies,and resource strategies;2)There is no significant difference in the use of regulation strategies,cognitive strategies and resource strategies between students whose mother tongue is Yi language or Chinese,but their use of social/affective strategies is significantly different;3)Students of different genders have significant differences in the use of regulation strategies but have no significant differences in the use of cognitive strategies,social/affective strategies and resource strategies;4)There is no significant correlation between the English vocabulary size of students and their use of regulation strategies and cognitive strategies,while the English vocabulary size of students is positively correlated with their use of social/affective strategies and resource strategies.The last part of the thesis gives some implications on the use of English vocabulary learning strategies for students in the Yi minority areas.
