Gong Xian was a giant in the history of the Chinese landscape paintings who is active in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.He is unique in theory,especially in the practice of painting and created a unique style of "Black Gong" which brought landscape painting into new generation.With "pen,ink,hill and dale" as the main entry point,this paper explores Gong Xian's methods and characteristics of drawing,rendering and composition and analyzes the main features of "Gong's cloud mountain" to extract the benefits for absorbing and practice,which is done by studying a series of tricks,theories,prefaces and postscripts of painting written by Gong Xian,related historical materials,and academic research of his paintings.Through large amount of practice,this paper tries to apply the achievements of research into the creation of landscape painting adhere to the principle of combination of theory and practice.The first part of this paper analyzes the main features of Gong Xian's painting including mellow,strong,rich and compact drawing,smooth,thick and layered rendering,singular and peaceful composition of landscape,and ultimate harmony.The second is a brief summary of Gong Xian's unique characteristics of landscape which are the soul stirring blackness and thickness,the mysterious“fairland”,singular perspective,and the unique painting language.Finally,with painting practice this paper discusses the enlightenment and influence of Gong Xian on the landscape painting creation from five aspects including subject selection,painting language,landscape composition,picture atmosphere,and style exploration.This paper presents that self-improvement is the essence of knowing and studying Gong Xian.Beside learning the painting work of past master,his spirit is more valuable to follow.Painting language is always born in times and past experiences can benefit today's creation.
