Today, studying abroad has become the choice of more and more people. The writing of application documents for overseas study plays an important role when these applicants applying for abroad studying.Through these documents, the college that the applicant shows an interest in is able to understand and examine the applicant's motivation of studying abroad, his or her English proficiency, expressive ability and thinking ability.Based on these, the college will consider whether give admission or scholarship to the applicant or not. Therefore, the writing of these application documents is of great significance.Due to the limited language proficiency of some applicants, the differences in expression between Chinese and English,as well as the special content and discourse requirements of these application documents, more and more applicants turn to translation companies to optimize their documents. Most of the applicants will provide Chinese version of the documents and entrust translation companies to help them translate into English. As these documents cover a wide range of professional fields and the translator's ability is limited, there often exist a lot of obstacles during translation. However,at present, there is very little research on the translation of application documents for overseas study. Therefore, the author hopes to sort out the problems that may be encountered in the translation of this kind of documents through this translation practice, and under the guidance of Peter Newmark's text typology,to put forward some feasible translation methods and strategies for studying abroad documents, hoping to improve the quality of translation in this field as well as to provide some insights for the translation of this kind of documents. This translation practice report can be divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the task description. The author explains the background, content, and significance of this practice report. The second chapter details the process of this translation task, including pre-translation preparation,while-translation process, and post-translation proofreading. The third chapter is the theoretical basis, namely Peter Newmark's text typology. It mainly introduces the text type under the theory, the two translation strategies under the theory—semantic translation and commimicative translation,as well as the application of these two translation strategies to this translation practice. The fourth chapter is case study.Under the guidance of text typology, detailed analysis is made about the application of semantic translation and communicative translation at linguistic and cultural level. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, which mainly includes the major findings, limitations and some suggestions given of this translation practice report.
