James McBride is a contemporary American writer and musician.His three novels,Miracle at St.Anna,Song Yet Sung and The Good Lord Bird all show up the deep concern for American history.In order to study the relationship between his novels and historical and cultural context,this thesis will start from the perspective of New Historicism and seek out the concrete manifestation of its various concepts and viewpoints in the novel text.At the same time,through the application of the concepts of "intertextuality" between history and text,"subversion" and "containment" and "self-fashioning" in the new historical historiography,the relationship bet,ween literature and history,society,culture and subject is analyzed with the concept of New Historicism.The thesis consists of three parts:introduction,text and conclusion.In the introduction,it mainly introduces James McBride's life experience and description of the works as a brief background introduction,and summarizes the status quo of academic research on writers' works in China and abroad,and explains the main research significance of this thesis.The text part is divided into four chapters.The first chapter is an introduction to the theory of New Historicism.It mainly introduces New Historicism for its unique perspective and important theoretical concept of literary criticism theory in the field of literary research,which is convenient for the practical application of these concepts.The second chapter will use the "historicity of text"and "textuality of history" as the important concept of the new historicism to examine the"intertextuality" relationship between literature and history in James McBride's novels.In the third chapter,we will use the principles of "subversion" and "containment" to observe the text and seek the concrete expression of the theoretical viewpoint in the works.The fourth chapter starts from the concept of " self-fashioning " of the New Historicism,describes the self-fashioning construction of the characters in the text and the process of"negotiation" with the outside world,and analyzes the historical political and cultural significance.In the final conclusion,we will try to summarize the results of the previous analysis and summarize the value and significance of the new historical investigation of James McBride's novels.
