As the first pioneer who advocated Chinese vernacular poetry,Hushi played an indispensable role in the theory and creation of new Chinese vernacular poetry. In a long period, there were condemns in the academic circle on the overall westernization regarding Hushi’s poetic concept of eliminating classical Chinese and starting vernacular Chinese.Nevertheless, looking at the root of Hushi’s opinion about vernacular literature,it’s a cultural split-up rather than a break from ancient Chinese poetry to keep and renovate the vernacular poetry. The concept of ’vernacular poetry’ being advocated by Hushi all the time is not thoroughly on the opposite side of ’traditional ancient Chinese poetry, but a modern exploration of the vernacular poetry on the basis of constant absorption of classical poetry and western poetic theories. It contains four chapters in the main part of the paper.First chapter is an analysis of the forming and improving of Hushi’s concept about vernacular poetry. His exploration about the new vernacular poetry had penetrated his whole life, which is divided into two stages. The 1st stage is the beginning period of vernacular poetry theory, when he studied overseas from 1911 to 1917;the 2nd stage is the forming period of vernacular poetry, when Hushi ’s theory of vernacular poetry took shape. In chapter Ⅱ,it aims in exploring the transmission of tradition of Tang and Song poetry in Hushi’s concept of vernacular poetry.Under the main theory of poetic revolution,Hushi’s opinion about eliminating classical Chinese and starting vernacular Chinese seems to be an absolutely anti-tradition way of thinking superficially, although he drew alternative lessons from traditional literature in the process, especially from Tang and Song poetic tradition. It inherited from 3 main aspects:firstly, developing the civil literature of the ’double-line’ literature;secondly, extending the tradition of Song poetry,’taking prose as poetry’;thirdly, specifying the theory of allusion in Tang and Song poetry. In chapter Ⅲ,it mainly discussed the absorption of outside scientific method by Hushi’s vernacular poetry theory based on inheriting Tang and Song poetic tradition. As a student studied in America with advance mind in the beginning of 20th century,Hushi couldn’t get away from the influence of western literal theory and scientific method during his literature reformation. The evolution idea, scepsis and experimentalism as well as the American New Poetry Movement, had provided effective theoretical support for Hushi’s construction of new vernacular poetry from both creative practice and theoretical establishment. In Chapter VI,based on the study of Hushi’s vernacular poetry concept and his creative practice,it gives an analysis about the significance of his concept in poetry development and its limitation.Hushi provides resources for the construction of modern mode of new poetry by inheriting the traditional way,and consolidated the foundation for Chinese poetry modernization during his exploration and practice of vernacular poetry theory. However,he blindly sought innovations and copied scientific methods, which also resulted in certain one-sidedness and limitation of his poetry.
