The research scope of this paper is the Northern Dynasty,Sui Dynasty and Tang Dynasty.And small grottoes,mainly refers to the number of grottoes less than 5(including 5).Shan Xi grottoes not only have great advantages in quantity and scale,but also play an important role in beauty and influence.As the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty(now Da Tong,Shan Xi),buddhism developed greatly,so the wind of building grottoes was prevailing.Before the Northern Wei Dynasty moved to Luo Yang,Ping Cheng was the center of grotto temples in the northern part of the Central Plains.As a result of the radiation of the grottoes in Shan Xi,it is of great value to study the China's grottoes.Starting from the basic situation,using the methods of typology,comparative study and so on,making relevant tables and proportion maps,showing the distribution of small grottoes in the middle and ancient times of Shan Xi Province with pictures and texts.Then on the basis of the collected data to carry on the relevant research.The analysis shows that the distribution of the small grottoes in the middle and ancient times is mainly in the north,most of them are in Jin Zhong,Chang Zhi and Lin Fen.This kind of distribution law has an important relationship with its political status and geographical location.The small grottoes in the middle and ancient times have a small difference in the shape of the grottoes,and the characteristics of the image-making have a certain difference,and their image-making characteristics are influenced by the Grottoes of Ping Cheng,Luo Yang and Ye Cheng.These areas have an common influence on them,which form the unique pattern of the small grottoes in the middle and ancient times of Shan Xi.The first part of this paper gives a detailed introduction to the academic history and the research history of the Shan Xi grottoes,and then gives an overview of the research methods and the purpose of the study.The second part introduces the general situation of the small grottoes in Shan Xi,through the collection and arrangement of the data such as the second,the third national non-movable cultural relics survey and the related brief and report,the statistics are made in the city and county,and relevant figures are made.The third part studies the period and area of the small grottoes in the Middle period of Shan Xi,and analyzes the relationship between the small grottoes.The fourth part summarizes the related research of small grottoes.
