Mao Qiling's commentary,The West Chamber,is a very important version in the history of The West Chamber commentary.He gave many opinions about The West Chamber,which is the subject of this paper.This paper is made up of five sections.The "Introduction" part introduces the academic value,research status and research objects and research methods of Mao Qiling's commentary.The body part is divided into three chapters.The first chapter examines Mao Qiling's research about The West Chamber on the author,the original story and the story of evolution,concludes that Mao Qiling's opinion about author of The West Chamber can only be Wang Shifu but not others;The source of The West Chamber,Yingying romance,Mao Qiling believed that it is only a fictional work of Yuan Zhen,so Cui Yingying and Zhang Sheng were not real person;and it is pointed out that the story of evolution about The West Chamber,Mao Qiling also made more specific introduction and analysis,though the materials he listed were not complete.The second chapter analyzes Mao Qiling's basic views on the language art of The West Chamber.And it makes more in-depth study of Mao's discourse from the two aspects of rhythm and language style,believes that Mao's views on the metrical part of The West Chamber such as the access of the modes of ancient Chinese music,the order of the Qupai,"Lingdu(??)" and"Fanyun(??)"·On the whole,it is worthy of recognition,though he also made mistakes about following the original version even including the flaws in it;for the different language styles of The West Chamber such as Tiaoxiao Yu,Fang Yu,Jingshi Yd,Chenfu Yu,and Jiaofangxingxi Yu,points out that Mao Qiling combined the characteristics of Zaju itself and took it from the traditional Qu concept,on the basis of Zhou Deqing,Wang Jide and other predecessors,sunmed up a relatively complete system of language styles in the creation of Zaju.The third chapter examines the narrative art of Mao Qiling's commentary.The first section analyzes the three levels of The West Chamber from the whole drama,"Ben(?)" to "Zhe(?)",and believes that Mao Qiling is fully affirming that the structure of The West Chamber is rigorous;although the understanding of the use of the "Xiezi(?-?)" of The West Chamber is not necessarily correct,it basically conforms to the actual practice of Yuan Zaju;The discussion of"Canchang(??)" is generally correct;as for the structure of Qu,it is not only considered that The West Chamber has the characteristics of "Crested Head,Pork Belly,Leopard Tail",just like the Qiao Mengfu said,writer in Yuan dynasty,but also same in song cycle of each "Zhe",thus,the characteristics of "Crested Head,Pork Belly,Leopard Tail" is extended to the scope of song cycle.The second section explores Mao Qiling's views on the narrative techniques of The West Chamber,summarizes Mao's basic viewpoints of "Qu Bai Xiang Sheng(????)","Bu Bu Zhuan Bian(????)","Zhu Jie Di Ru(????)"?"Mai Fu Zhao Ying(????)",and systematically presents Mao Qiling's narrative techniques of The West Chamber.Finally,it is the conclusion part,which makes an overall evaluation of Mao Qiling's discussion on The West Chamber,and believes that Mao's study of The West Chamber has both success and failure,but,it is obvious that success greater than failure,especially his spirit of independent thinking in scholarly studies,is worthy of affirmation in exploring the original features of The West Chamber.Therefore,Mao Qiling's research on The West Chamber is undeniable.
