Analysis Of Mansfield's Short Novels From The Perspective Of Julie Mitchell's Feminism

Both Juliet Mitchell and Mansfield are the pioneers of the British women's explorers of the road to women's liberation.Their theoretical exploration or literary creation all reflect the reality that women are subjected to dual oppression from both capitalist society and patriarchal ideology.They contribute to the quest for the way of women's liberation.This thesis chooses Juliet Mitchell's theory of women as the theoretical basis,reread the text of Mansfield's short novels,and explores the problems in the process of women's liberation.Julie Mitchell put forward the “four major structures”and the theory of “binary”.This thesis reread the novels of Mansfield in the perspective of Julie Mitchell theory on women,finding that female characters in Mansfield's novels are living around the four structures,bearing the double oppression of capitalism and patriarchy.Finally women's oppressed status and tragic fate shaped.This thesis will use the theory of "four major structures" and the "binary" to interpret the female characters in Mansfield's novels and the feminist ideas of the writer.The first chapter is the introduction which analyses the significance and proposal of Mansfield's short novels in the vision of Mitchell's Feminist,summarizes the researches on Maxism Feminism at home and abroad and finally explains the research methods and innovations.The second chapter is the “Binary”in Mitchell's theory and Mansfield's short novels.This part gives an account of the economic monism of Marx theory on women's oppression.Julie Mitchell put forward the "binary" theory and the "four structures" theory based on Maxism Feminism,which fit Mansfield's “binary” narration.The third chapter is the writing of Julie Mitchell's production structure theory and Mansfield's females taking part in social production.This chapter firstly introduces the classic Marxism's exposition on women's participation in social production and then analyses Julie Mitchell's theory of production structure in detail.At last combining with Mansfield's two novels A Day Of Miss Moss and A Girl Who Is Finding A Job,this chapter discusses the influence of production structure to the formation of women's oppression status.The fourth chapter concretely analyses Julie Mitchell's theory of sex and family structure combining with Mansfield's novel texts Happiness and Prelude.The fifth chapter combining Julie Mitchell's children's socialization structure with Mansfield's novel discusses what duties the patriarchal society leaves to women is to raise children.And then the dialectical investigation of this "duty " is carried out.The sixth chapter discusses the theoretical and practical value of this subject and analyses the historical limitations.Juliet Mitchell provides a practical theoretical basis for women's Liberation by means of theoretical research.Mansfield writes the miserable life situation of women in the way of novel text,revealing the oppressed reality of women.Rereading Mansfield's novels under the view of Juliet Mitchell theory,which is beneficial to have a direct experience of what causes women's difficult fate and to have a better understanding of Mansfield's texts and feminism.At the same time the interpretation of Mansfield's novels contribute to further understanding and study of the Mitchel's theory.
