It is a translation practice report based on the translation practice of English Meaning and Culture(chapters one&two)written by Anna Wierzbicka in 2006.This book consists of nine chapters, and its author demonstrates the excellent function of the theory of "natural semantic meta-language" and "cultural script" method for semantic description through a large number of examples.English:Meaning and Culture attempts to demonstrate that a new paradigm based on Natural Semantic Metalanguage makes it possible to delve into the cultural meaning of Anglo English. In this book, the author elaborated the complex and rich connotation of cultural concepts, cultural keywords, language norms, etc.,and used a large number of scripts as examples to compare the different ways of thinking of Chinese and western people in different countries. The original language is formal and normative, with clear subordination between sentences, strong logicality, and natural norms of discourse cohesion. Therefore, the complexity of this book and the differences between English and Chinese cultures and languages bring great difficulties to the translator. This translation practice was analyzed from three aspects:the translation of vocabulary in academic work, the translation of the writing characteristics in academic work, and translation of discourse cohesion in academic work.In order to complete the translation practice better,in the process of translation, the author takes Tytler’s Three Principles of Translation as the guidance, and adopts appropriate translation skills(addition, omission, conversion, etc.)to properly translate the original text. This translation practice report is mainly divided into following five parts. The first part is the translation task description. It briefly summarizes the background of translation practice tasks, the characteristics of translation practice and the significance of translation practice. The second part is the description of the translation process, which mainly introduces the translation process, including the three stages of preparation before translation, process of translation and proof-reading.The third part is the translation theory, which briefly introduces the theory and its application in this translation practice. The fourth part is the case analysis, which is the main part of this paper. The fifth part gives a conclusion, including summary of the translation practice as well as the reflection of the translator.
