Zeng Xie was a poet in the Southern Song Dynasty and a descendant of Zeng’s family in Nanfeng, one of the "Seven Zengs of Nanfeng".The formation of his poetry style was not only related to his family education and family origin, but also depended on his own life and official experience. At the same time,it was also influenced by the poetry circle at that time. This paper will interpret Zeng Xie from different angles and levels, and discuss Zeng Xie and his poems from four aspects:The first chapter traces back to the origin, starting from the background of Zeng Xie’s times, combs Zeng Xie’s life, friendship and official experience,so as to have a comprehensive understanding of Zeng Xie’s ideological characteristics.Zeng Xie is the grandson of Zeng Zhao,Zeng Xun’s youngest son.Zeng Xun died when Zeng Xie was 5 years old.He mainly lived in the pre-middle period of the Southern Song Dynasty, and because the Song Dynasty gave preferential treatment to scholars,he had a positive and enterprising mind. But because of the disaster of Yuanyou’s party struggle,Zeng’s family failed in political career, and Zeng Xie was also affected by it.Zeng Xie failed in the imperial examination and did not gain fame.He only took the blessing of his ancestors as an official.Zeng Xie has several poetry friends who have frequent exchanges. They are also the singers and objects of Zeng Xie,such as Wang Zhi(courtesy name is Jingwen),Li Chuquan(courtesy name is Cuibo),Chen Conggu(courtesy name is Xiyan),Zhao Shiyan(courtesy name is Youyi)and Wang Yanrong(courtesy name is Yanbi).Zeng Xie was born in a Confucian family and deeply influenced by the Confucian thought of go into the society. When he can’t achieve his ambition,Zeng Xie integrated the extraordinary and secular thoughts of Buddhism and Taoism, turning his eyes to the deep mountains, forests and springs, and his thoughts tended to be secluded. The second chapter goes deep into his works and discusses the theme and content of Zeng Xie’s poems.Volume 37 of All Song Poems contains two volumes of 209 poems and one sentence.Among them, there are 35 ancient five-character poems,8 ancient seven-character poems,16 five-character poems,69 seven-character poems,16 five-character absolute sentences and 65 seven-character absolute sentences. The author classifies Zeng Xie’s poems into four categories according to their themes and contents. The first kind of friendship poems is the largest, with 151 poems,of which 77 are sung and poems, the content of which are mostly singing and chanting with friends;33 poems are presented, which express the poet’s deep friendship with his friends;41 poems of farewell lamentation, including 35 poemsexpressing the poet’s wishes for his friends’ future;and 6 poems of elegy, which express the poet’s mourning and remembrance for his friends. In the second category, there are 6 poems chanting objects. The poets express their emotional tendencies by using objects to express their aspirations.35 scenic poems of the third kind describe what the poet sees, hears, thinks and feels in his daily life. There are 17 other poems in the fourth category,of which 7 are sentimental poems and 10 are pastoral poems related to farm life. The third chapter summarizes and analyses the artistic techniques used in Zeng Xie’s poems and the artistic realm and style embodied in his poems,so as to make an objective evaluation of Zeng Xie’s achievements in poetry creation.Zeng Xie’s poetry pays attention to rules and forms of classical poetic composition and rhyme. He often uses allusions in his poetry creation, which makes the poetry thick and graceful;works in opposition, and the structure of the poetry is symmetrical and orderly;Zeng Xie prefers refined words. He pays attention to the use of verbs and reduplicated words to make the poetry more vivid and fluent;his ingenious personification makes the poetry lively and delicate and moving.Zeng Xie’s rich imagination makes ordinary images full of unique aesthetic experience, which makes poetry more novel, unique and unusual.Zeng Xie’s poems not only construct a fresh land, but also create a magnificent state of poetry. At the same time, the coexistence of popularity and elegance is the characteristics of his poetry style. The fourth chapter summarizes and analyses the artistic origin of Zeng Xie’s poems.Firstly,Tao Yuanming’s lofty personality of living in poverty and living in seclusion illuminated Zeng Xie’s frustrating career. The poet unconsciously approached the image of a hermit who was close to nature and extraordinary.Secondly,Su Shi’s thought of blending the three religions and his broad-minded life experience also gave Zeng Xie enlightenment. Finally, influenced by Jiangxi Poetry School represented by Chen Yuyi,he used the poetry theories of Jiangxi Poetry School such as "taking literary works as poems","taking new life and changing bones" and "turning iron into gold" in his poems.
