A Study On Metaphor Translation In Howard Goldblatt's Version Of POW From The Perspective Of Conceptual Metaphor Theory

POW is a novel written by MoYan,and it tells the customs of his hometown Shandong Province.The novel was published in 2003 and has won many awards,including the award for Outstanding Performance of Chinese Literature in 2004.Howard Goldblatt's Version of POW is welcomed at abroad.This thesis analyzes Howard Goldblatt's Version of POW from the perspective of conceptual metaphor theory.Conceptual metaphor is pervasive in our everyday life,which is not just in language but in thought and action.Metaphor was divided into three types,which are orientational metaphor,ontological metaphor and structural metaphor.This thesis takes the Howard Goldblatt's translation of POW as example,combines the concrete examples,analyzes the conceptual metaphor from above three aspects,and summarizes some translation principles and laws by analyzing Howard Goldblatt's Version of POW.Through the research,the author finds the following conclusions: First,conceptual metaphor is pervasive in our life,so is in POW;Second,when dealing with conceptual metaphor,Goldblatt mostly uses the strategy of deleting the former metaphor and remaining the meaning of the sentence;Third,due to the differences in cultural and language background between the source readers and target readers,diverse translation strategies can be adopted to maintain the metaphor of the source text,translator here mainly adopts the strategy of translating into the same metaphor;translating into the similar metaphor;translating metaphor into non-metaphor;translating non-metaphor into metaphor.This thesis will provide certain guidance for the future study in metaphor translation,so as to improve the translation quality in metaphor translation through some relevant solutions.Meanwhile,there are some weaknesses in this research,for the conceptual translation is a complex cognition and it's hard to clarify its process clearly.
