The novel "Brooklyn" tells not only the immigrant story of an Irish youth,but also the adventure of whom to construct a modern self.This thesis focuses on the modern self-construction of the novel's protagonist Alice.First,leaving Enniscorthy to Brooklyn is based on a desire to construct a modern self In Brooklyn Alice's modern self was constructed by a kind of American life.But the construction of the modern self has intensified the arrival of modernity issues.Once again,returning to Enniscorthy,Alice has encountered the real challenges.Due to the incompleteness of the modern discourse system and the problems caused by a mixed cultural identity,Alice eventually encountered an inevitable modern tragedy.This thesis is divided into three parts.The first part is the introduction of the first chapter,which summarizes the research ideas and literature reviews of the novel,explains the lack of the research on the "modernity" of Toibin's works and points out the necessity of this research.The second part is the second to fourth chapters.The second chapter mainly discusses the social life state of Enniscorthy,one of the main backgrounds of the novel,and analyzes the society with a mixture of tradition and modernity is the deep reason for the protagonist to leave her hometown.The third chapter begins with the protagonist's life in Brooklyn.To analyze the protagonist's integration into American life,which frees her from relying on the order of her hometown,and helps her to construct a modern self.At the same time,the protagonist also acquired a mixed cultural identity.The third chapter mainly discusses the modernity problems that the protagonist faced when she returned to her hometown.Due to the expansion of subjectivity,the personal feelings have violently conflicted with the ethical world,but the protagonist is unable to resolve this conflict,and finally caused a modern tragedy.The third part is the conclusion.Through the previous analysis of the modern self-construction problem,the reasons for the hero's modern tragedy are analyzed.It is pointed out that due to the unfinished characteristics of "modernity" and the contradiction of Alice's mixed cultural identity,Alice's personal tragedy is unavoidable.Generally speaking,this thesis aims to explore the gains and losses,joys and sorrows of the protagonist in the whole process of modern self-construction through the interpretation and analysis of the novel text,so as to open up a new perspective for the study of Tobin's novel creation art.
