| Scholars have spent more than two thousand years in studying EnglishChinese translation strategies both domestically and internationally.With the development of intercultural communication,increasing importance has been attached to translation.However,there are a few studies on vulgarism translation in language and culture.As an indispensable part of culture,it is necessary to study the translation of vulgarism.The introduction of grids theory not only opens a window for translation,but also brings new inspiration to the studies of vulgarism translation.Vulgarism is widely used in literary works.However,there are few studies on its translation.Some scholars have proposed some translation methods and strategies,such as literal translation and free translation,naturalization and alienation,and omission and functional equivalence.It’s clear that these translation studies still remain in the traditional translation level.In other words,they are still lingering on the text conversion and few studies are from the cultural aspect.The emerging of cultural turn in the field of translation shifted the focus of translation from literal conversion to cultural studies.The situation urgently requires translators and scholars to study the translation of “vulgar terms” from the point of culture.By comparison the two Chinese versions of The Catcher in the Rye translated by Shi Xianrong and Sun Zhongxun,the author found great differences in the translation of vulgarism.In order to better translate vulgarism and appreciate and learn the translation methods adopted in the two Chinese versions,this article explores in depth the factors that affect the two translators to adopt different translation methods mainly from the perspective of conceptual grids and textual grids.This article further elaborates on the differences between the two versions from the perspective of ideology in conceptual grids and words,structure,motif,literary techniques in the poetics of textual grids,analyzing the intentionsof the two translators.The analysis shows that the two translators adapted their translations according to their target readers.The manifestations are as follows: on the diction,Shi preferred four-letter words,while Sun did not;About the expression,Shi adopted classical style while Sun used colloquial style.There were adjustments of words class and sentences to different degree in both versions.On the conceptual grids,these methods adding the creative background of the work;deleting or converting the contents that fail to meet the aesthetic standards of readers and adding a detailed description were only adopted by Shi.Based on reader’s textual grids and conceptual grids,the two translators use those translation strategies to adapt their translations in order to get their target readers’ approvals,so as to achieve the purpose of cultural communication. |
