Balthus, formerly known as Balthasar Klossowski de Rola,is a famous French painter of the 20th century. He devoted his life to figurative painting. His works involved several aspects, such as characters, landscapes, still lifes, etc. The paintings focused on the expression of light and shadow, but the purpose was not to reproduce objective light and shadow. In his paintings, light usually appeared as a kind of "concentrating light",which shined on the main characters of the picture and formed a strong effect.Different from ordinary performance in traditional paintings,Balthus did not deliberately depict the rich level changes produced by light projection on the object, but paid more attention to the composition of the shape of light and shadow in the picture, making the light in his painting much mysterious. In order to strengthen the geometrical sense,he summed up the light and shadow formed by the light projection on the object image,so that the bright and dark parts appeared geometrically, the light and shadow were constructed in an orderly manner, and the picture was balanced and stable. The first chapter of this article outlines the artistic characteristics of Balthus, and his works had an etermal sense of order. The second chapter studies the light and shadow in Balthus's paintings through two aspects of "light of gathering" of mystery and "balance of light" of geometric order. The third chapter is the creation of oil paintings for the individual"studio" series. In the process of creation,it pays attention to the performance of light and shadow.
