English,as one of the global languages,plays a pivotal role in international communication between different countries,especially in countries where their mother tongue is not English.As the most populous country in the world,Chinese people want to communicate with the whole world fluently,which must let middle school students master English as their necessary communication skill.Therefore,learning English well is an imperative way in current situation in China.The New English Curriculum Standards(2017)divide English subject into five parts: listening,speaking,reading,viewing and writing.Reading is one of the most complex and difficult skills for its integration of students' input and output in reading classes.In some cases,English reading proficiency can represent the overall English level and ability.However,the current English reading teaching methods are pretty single,and some reading materials are long and difficult.So many students are not interested in reading part.In 2014,professor Zhang Xuexin of Fudan University proposed PAD model in order to enhance students' interest and initiative in learning.This specific type of teaching model reintegrates the elements of teachers,students,teaching content,teaching methods,etc.,and forms a scientific and operable teaching model.This thesis mainly discusses PAD Model in English reading teaching in senior high school based on constructivist learning theory,cooperative learning theory and autonomous learning theory.And it also demonstrates the role of PAD Model in cultivating students' autonomous learning ability,cooperative learning ability,creativity and critical thinking ability through empirical research.In the course of the whole research,91 students from two parallel classes(Class8 and Class 2)in the Middle School Attached to Qinghai Normal University are the main research subjects.Class 8 is the experimental class and Class 2 is the control class.From the beginning of the experiment to the end of it,PAD model was the main model in teaching English reading part in Class 8,while Class 2 mainly used the bottom-up model.In addition,about 20 English teachers are also the research subjects,who are from the Middle School Attached to Qinghai Normal University and other middle schools.Finally,this thesis mainly uses three main instruments: test,questionnaire and interview to collect research data,SPSS software was applied to analyze and compare the data result.The experimental results show that the average reading score in Class 8 increased from 24.61 in the pre-test to 27.70 in the post-test,while the average score in Class 2was 24.22 in the pre-test and 24.53 in the post-test.In addition,the students in Class 8have better English reading strategies and awareness,classroom engagement,autonomous learning awareness,cooperative learning ability than the students in Class 2.More importantly,the results of teachers' interview proves that teachers' teaching enthusiasm,personal style as well as job satisfaction have obviously improved under the guidance of PAD model in English reading teaching.In addition to the research results and advantages of PAD Class model,it also has some limitations in English reading teaching in senior high school.The teacher's preparation time has increased significantly and he or she also needs to spend more time and energy supervising students learning.Students autonomous learning tasks are onerous.Teachers need to refer to the curriculum standards and syllabus,focusing on the text and difficulties.They also need to objectively evaluate students' current learning level and ability so as to design learning tasks.In conclusion,the author answered the three questions that were proposed before the research through empirical study,and proved the feasibility and value of PAD model in English reading teaching in senior high school.Meanwhile,the author also pointed out some limitations and suggestions about PAD model in English reading teaching.Finally,the author expects that more and more scholars and teachers from basic education will be capable to practice this localized teaching model.
