Abstract/Summary:
Reading is an essential way of language input.Grades of reading comprehension reflect readers’ability of obtaining information from texts.Studies of English reading comprehension from the perspective of cognitive psychology can deepen people’s understanding of English language learning and guide teachers and students to adjust their teaching and learning methods as to improve their efficiency.Field independent-field dependent cognitive style and working memory are important parts of cognitive psychology.Field independent-field dependent cognitive style refers to individual’s stable preference for information organizing and processing.Working memory is a memory system with limited capacity,which is responsible for information storage and processing.It plays an important part in high-level cognitive psychology,such as language understanding and problem solving.There are some limitations such as inconsistent results and limited methods of data analysis in previous studies of interrelations of field independent-field dependent cognitive style,working memory and English reading comprehension grade.Therefore,to solve the problems of previous studies,this study focuses on interrelations of field independent-field dependent cognitive style,working memory and English reading comprehension grade.This study tries to answer the following three questions:(1)what is the relationship between field independent-field dependent cognitive style and English reading comprehension grade?(2)what is the relationship between working memory and English reading comprehension grade?(3)what is the relationship among field independent-field dependent cognitive style,working memory and English reading comprehension grade?Subjects are 120 freshmen of non-English majors.A Cognitive Style Figure Test,a Working Memory Test and an English reading comprehension test are adopted as instruments.After data collection,SPSS 21 is used by the author to do data analysis,which includes descriptive analysis,Pearson correlation analysis,independent sample t-test,double factor variance analysis and stepwise linear multiple regression.Results are as follows:First,there is a weak relationship between field independent-field dependent cognitive style and English reading comprehension grade.There is a significant difference between students with field independent cognitive style and those with field dependent cognitive style in English reading comprehension grade.Students with field independent cognitive style have higher grades than those with field dependent cognitive style in English reading comprehension test.Second,working memory has a significant marked relationship with English reading comprehension grade.There is a significant difference between students with high working memory and those with low working memory in English reading comprehension grade.Students with high working memory have higher grades than those with low working memory in English reading comprehension test.Third,the main effect of field independent-field dependent cognitive style and working memory on English reading comprehension grade is significant,while the interplay of field independent-field dependent cognitive style and working memory is not significant in English reading comprehension grade.According to the results of stepwise linear multiple regression,both field independent-field dependent cognitive style and working memory significantly predict English reading comprehension grade.The combination of field independent-field dependent cognitive style and working memory can explain 25.2%variance towards English reading comprehension grade.The standardized regression formulation is English reading comprehension grade=0.415×working memory+0.244×field independent-field dependent cognitive style.In conclusion,there are positive interrelations of field independent-field dependent cognitive style,working memory and English reading comprehension grade.Teachers should help students improve working memory and master English reading strategies,so as to improve teachers’ teaching efficiency and students’learning efficiency.
