China's National Images From The Perspective Of Other

National image is not only a reflection of the overall condition of a country,but is also a crucial measurement of the international status of a country.In recent years,many studies have been done on the construction of China's national images.However,few studies about China's national images have been carried out from the perspective of Other.The data of this study is the narration and comments given by the foreign experts in the documentary China: Time of Xi produced by the Discovery Channel.This is the first time that the international mainstream media has broadcast President Xi Jinping's ideas of governing the country systematically.The author adopts the Attitude system of Appraisal Theory(Martin & White,2005)as analytical framework,aiming to answer the following research questions:(1)What is the distribution features of attitudinal resources in the documentary China: Time of Xi?(2)What is China's national images constructed by the attitudinal resources from the perspective of Other in the documentary China: Time of Xi?Through quantitative and qualitative analysis,the findings are as follows.Firstly,there are abundant attitudinal resources in this documentary and the distribution of different resources in each subcategories is diverse.On the one hand,the Appreciation resources possess the largest proportion,followed by the Judgement resources.And the least frequently-used resources are Affect resources.Such distribution pattern implies that a relatively objective attitude has been held in this documentary in that Appreciation is the most objective resource and Affect is the most subjective one comparatively.In addition,the positive resources in each subcategory of Attitude system outnumber the negative ones,which suggests that an overall positive China's national image is portrayed in this documentary.On the other hand,among the Affect resources,Dis/inclination and Dis/satisfaction resources take the priority over all other resources.As for Judgement,Social Esteem resources arenumerically superior to Social Sanction,and Capacity,Tenacity and Veracity resources make up relatively higher percentage than other resources.In terms of Appreciation,Valuation resources hold dominant position.Secondly,four kinds of national images of China have been constructed through different attitudinal resources in the documentary China: Time of Xi.Different attitudinal resources altogether show that China has been shaped as an innovative country committed to addressing domestic problems,a democratic country devoted to caring for people's livelihood,a progressive country determined to implement comprehensive reform and an aspiring country dedicated to promoting globalization and establishing a community of shared destiny.As the documentary China: Time of Xi absorbs different voices of experts and scholars from all over the world,this study is conducive to probing into China's national images constructed from the perspective of Other.Moreover,exploration on China's national images shaped by other countries from their own standpoints and values not only reflects the demands and prospect of the building of national images,but also sheds some light on how to tell China's stories well so as to disseminate positive China's national images and specify the direction and focus of self-image construction.
