The mastery and application of culture in English learning helps to improve students’ intercultural communicative competence. This study adopts quantitative methods such as vocabulary test and questionnaire to explore college students’ ability to express Chinese culture in English and intercultural communication competence, and to explore the relationship between cultural aphasia and intercultural communicative competence. In this study,539 non-English major postgraduates and undergraduates were selected as the subjects.According to CET-6 scores, they were divided into high-level English group and low-level English group.Based on Byram’s(1997)classification of culture,a corpus of Chinese cultural words and their English expressions was constructed, and the corresponding cultural words were extracted proportionally from the corpus to design the test paper of Chinese cultural words. All the subjects were tested on the expression of Chinese cultural words in English, intercultural communicative competence assessment and questionnaires. In addition,a questionnaire survey was conducted among 40 English teachers to investigate their attitudes towards Chinese culture teaching in English teaching.Through SPSS16.0,independent sample T test and Pearson correlation analysis were carried out on the valid data collected in the study. The major findings of this research are as follows: 1)Students’ ability to express Chinese culture in English in HG and LG is generally low,and the problem of “Chinese cultural aphasia” is serious. There are significant differences(p=.001<0.05)in the ability of expressing Chinese culture in English between different EFL learners. The overall ability of expressing Chinese culture in HG is better than that in LG.2).The overall level of all the students’ intercultural communicative competence is not high. There are significant differences(p=.013<0.05)in intercultural communicative competence among different EFL learners.Learners in HG have a higher level of intercultural communicative competence than learners in LG.3)Different EFL learners will affect their ability to express Chinese culture in English and their intercultural communicative competence. The learners at the higher English proficiency level, who have better ability to express Chinese culture in English and better intercultural communicative competence.4)The findings indicate that students’ ability to express Chinese culture in English is related to their intercultural communicative competence. With the improvement of students’ ability to express Chinese culture in English, their intercultural communicative competence has also been improved. The higher the students’ English proficiency level, the more significant the correlation is.5)Both teachers and students have positive attitudes towards Chinese culture, but the current situation of Chinese culture teaching is not optimistic. On the whole, students’ ability to express Chinese culture in English is relatively low.The results of questionnaires show that teaching links can helpimprove students’ input and learning of Chinese cultural knowledge. Therefore,College English teaching needs to reform English textbooks. At the same time, cultural knowledge is taught in the classroom to provide a good communication environment for students and help them further improve their intercultural communication ability.
