Through three studies, this paper examines the phenomenon of gender stereotype of names, and explores the influence of name-gender consistency on memory and impression evaluation.Studyl A adopts questionnaire to examine whether individuals hold name-gender stereotype, and the result shows that people can infer targets5 gender by their names.Study 1B explores implicit name-gender stereotype through sematic priming paradigm.One-way repeated measurement indicates that the main effect of face-name consistence is significant, compared with the condition of face-name inconsistence, response time is shorter in the condition of consistency. It implies that people hold explicit and implicit name-gender stereotype.Study2 applies learning-recognition paradigm to examine the influence of name-gender stereotype on recognition. The independent variable is name-gender consistency, including three conditions of consistency, inconsistency and neutrality. The dependent variables are response time and the accuracy of recognition. One factor repeated measurement indicates that, compared with inconsistent and neutral conditions, response time of recognition is shorter in the condition of name-gender consistency, and the score of recognition is higher in the consistent condition.Based on the Stereotype Content Model,Study3A compares the differences of targets'with three types of names in the dimension of warmth, competence and attractiveness, and interpersonal attraction.Repeated measurement indicates that people have the impression of high competence and low warmth for target's who taking male names. On the contrary, people have the impression of high warmth and low competence for target's who taking female names. In the dimension of competence, peoples' evaluation of female targets' with masculine names is positive than male targets',with female names.Study3B compares the differences of evaluations of targets' with different names in the contexts of outing and contest.Repeated measurement reveals that evaluation of targets with opposite gender names is similar to that of heterosexual targets;evaluation of targets with gender consistent names is more positive than targets with inconsistent and neutral names, and people are more willing to interact with individuals with gender-consistent names.Based on the above results of studies, the following conclusions can be drawn:(1)People hold the stereotype of name orientation is consistent with individuals'gender.(2)Compared with targets consistent with name gender stereotype, targets who taking name inconsistent with gender are more memorable.(3)The evaluation of targets inconsistent with name gender stereotype is more negative than targets whose names are consistent with gender.
