Mosaic is a kind of art pattern which is formed by the arrangement of small graphic elements,and the core problem of mosaic simulation is how to generate compact distribution of a lot of small graphic elements.This paper studies the problem,and proposes a new method for rapid synthesis of the compact distribution of various shape graphic elements,so as to achieve a variety of mosaic simulation.The primary idea is to partition the distribution area into small regions based on the Voronoi diagram with each region representing a space of an element,so as to achieve the compact distributions of all the elements.The innovative points of our method lie in that apart from the traditional Euclidean distance,another four distance metrics are adopted during the Voronoi diagram generation process to control the shape of the Voronoi polygonal generated and finally achieve the compact element distributions of five different shapes.Additionally approaches are also introduced on controlling the size and direction of the Voronoi polygon to generate element distributions with size and direction variation during the Voronoi diagram generation process,so as to enrich the effect of element compact distributions.Further,this paper applies the algorithm to the field of image styling,it can automatically convert any picture into a mosaic effect.Moreover,in order to increase the synthesis efficiency,in this paper the time-consuming Voronoi diagram generation process has been converted into a graphic plotting process and speed up the synthesis process with the aid of GPU parallel computing ability.The experiment results indicate that approaches could accomplish the element compact distributions of five shapes:circle,oval,square,rectangle and triangle with interactive synthesis efficiency and relatively high element coverage scale.This paper,not only has a good application value for mosaic simulation,but also as a scientific research on element compact distributions,carries certain scientific enlightenment significance.
