Fritz Scholder(1937-2005)was one of the most representative expressionist artists with Native American Indian heritage, featuring its Native American series work of art.He once declared that was he not an Indian,he would neither be making any work of art related to Indian Americana. However, the Indian series was a very decisive and controversial series that he had ever made. Most of his art works were composed in oil painting, lithography and sculpture. The way he composed paintings of this series was far from the norm.He refused to depict Indian people in a romantic way using foreign imagination towards the Indian Americans, but chooses to describe the Indian community in its reality, with bold colors and strong lines. The essay is designed to focus on the analysis of visual traits in Fritz Scholder's Indian series. This is an insight into how he combined expressionism,Indian traditions, and the predicament of the Indian community to form a brand new style of art which is still inspiring today.
