This translation report studies the translation of philosophical terms from the perspective of terminology. The author selected the article “Enlightenment” written by William Bristow as the translation material, took the philosophical terms in the article as the research objects, and summarized the difficulties encountered in the translation process through the analysis of their characteristics, types and translation standards, trying to conclude the feasible translation methods. The author hopes to make some contribution to the study of Enlightenment philosophy while improving her ability to master philosophical terms and texts. The author of the source text focuses on the context of academic history of the Enlightenment from the perspective of Western philosophy. He combed and interpreted the development trend of science, epistemology and metaphysics, political theory, ethical theory and religion,as well as the aesthetics in the Enlightenment from the three main sections of “The True” “The Good” and “The Beautiful”,discussed the ideal and spirit of the Enlightenment in different contexts, and interpreted the historical implication and value orientation of the Enlightenment. As a philosophical academic paper,it is necessary for the source text to review the classical literature of Enlightenment philosophers, which inevitably involves a large number of western philosophical terms, therefore, the quality of the rendering of philosophical terms is directly related to the quality of the whole translation. The translation of philosophical terms naturally becomes the top priority of this translation project, which is the distinctive feature of this translation practice. This report is divided into four sections: the description of the translation task, the translation process, the case analysis and the conclusion drawn from this translation practice. The first part briefly introduces the translation task, the content and the author of the source text,as well as the significance of this translation project. The second part describes the preparation before translation, the analysis and modification of the first draft and the second draft, and the analysis and embellishment of the final version. In the part of case study, the author embarks from the consideration of the applicability of terminology in this case, probes into the basic types of philosophical terms and the problems encountered in the process of translation of philosophical terms,so as to summarize the translation methods applicable to philosophical terms. Therefore, she comes to the following conclusion: in the process of translating philosophical terms, the translator should adopt specific translation methods for different types of philosophical terms based on the characteristics of the terms concerned and the standards of term translation, such as trial translation, conventional translation, fait accompli translation, annotated translation,origin-racing translation and contextual translation. The fourth part sums up the unsolved problems and relevant thinking,as well as the inspiration and prospect for the future work.
