At the end of the 19 th century, the creation of psychoanalysis influenced a group of artists. They set out from their dreams and subconscious, looking for inspiration, and created surrealist paintings. As a media of visual art, animation, also known as moving pictures,is an important carrier of expression in the development of surrealist art.The creation of animation art is not satisfied with imitating the material world of reality,it can express unrestricted content that reality can not present. Most of the early experimental animation artists were painting artists. They used the time extension characteristics of animation to expand the static painting into the art of time and space.Psychoanalysis tries to reveal the complex psychological state of human beings. It shows a strange situation in the form of animation, which is unique in the field of animation. The similarity between artistic creation and dream-making lies in metaphor and symbolism.Surrealist animation usually uses grotesque figures, exaggerated combinations of shapes, distorted perspectives and special content themes to metaphorize and symbolize people or things in the real world. They bring audiences into fantastic, absurd,or contradictory situations, and at the same time more appropriately express the feelings and state of people in contemporary society, which is also their charm. This paper attempts to make a comparative analysis between painting and animation, and discuss the expressive skills and narrative methods of surrealist animation.
