Zheng Zhong’s “Zhou Li Jie Gu”is an annotation book made by Zheng Zhong(Zheng Sinong),a Confucianist of the Eastern Han Dynasty, for “Zhou Li”.Zheng Zhong, who did not know the time of birth, was probably born around the time of Jianwu according to the investigation and demonstration. The book“Zhou Li” was lost about the late Tang Dynasty or the early five Dynasties.Zheng Xuan’s Notes on “Zhou Li” quoted a lot of Zheng Zhong’s notes. After the loss of Zhou Li Jie Gu,Zheng Xuan’s Notes became the most important book to study Zheng Zhong’s notes.Ma Guohan of the Qing Dynasty devoted himself to sorting out the lost books. He collected Zheng Zhong’s lost books from Zheng Xuan’s Notes on “Zhou Li Zhu” and other books and arranged them into six volumes of Zheng Sinong’s Interpretation of Zhou Rites.Included in Ma Guohan’s “Yu Han Shan Fang Ji Yi Shu”.Ma Guohan has collected many and extensive annotations, but there are also some shortcomings, such as errors and omissions.According to Zheng Zhong’s annotations to Zhou Li Jie Gu,Zheng Zhong has his own set of annotations, such as quoting classics, explaining "ancient" with "present",explaining "old book" characters, and explaining with judgment sentence patterns. In addition,Zheng Zhong also collated the text for the annotated pronunciation.Zheng Zhong’s "Zhou Li Jie Gu" contains a wide range of contents, which can be discussed from the "Five Rites" and Zheng Zhong’s interpretation of "Winter Official Examination of Gong Ji".Zheng Zhongzhong interpreted the scriptures by following the methods of Exegetics in explaining characters, words and sentences. The characteristics of its annotations are as follows: citing documents and annotating classics;using substitution method to annotate classics;explaining the characters of old books;annotating classics mainly by means of chapters and sentences, with the method of articles;annotating the same scriptures many times;paying attention to the standardization of language;inheriting the former Confucianism, which is embodied in Zhou Li Jie Gu’s annotations of classics, from which we can also see the annotations characteristics of Confucianists in the Han Dynasty.Zheng Zhong’s Notes on “Zhou Li Jie Gu” has been quoted a lot since Zheng Xuan’s annotations on “Zhou Li Zhu”.The influence of Zheng Zhong’s annotations has been increasing.Zheng Zhong’s annotations and Zheng Xuan’s Notes on Zhou Li have become more and more closely related, and becomepart of Zheng Xuan’s Notes on Zhou Li.Its benefit is to preserve the contents of Zheng Zhong’s Notes. With the rise of Zheng Xuan’s status, the previous researchers of Zheng Zhong’s Notes have not been attached As a result,Zheng Zhong’s Notes became a part of Zheng Xuan’s Notes and lost its independent form of existence.Zheng Zhong’s influence on later generations is mainly manifested in three aspects: the quotation and transcription of Zheng Zhong’s annotations by later scholars of Zhou Li,the evaluation and the influence on the study of Zhou Li in modern times. After Zheng Zhong, scholars of later generations quoted and transcribed more of Zheng Zhong’s Notes, and some of them affirmed, negated or added their meanings. In modern times, the study of Zhou Li is declining and few researchers have studied it.Only a few scholars have studied the phonology, exegetics, linguistics and other knowledge contained in its annotations. There is no special study on Zheng Zhong’s book Zhou Li Jie Gu.
