This report is study on the translation of the first chapter of novel Less. The novel mainly tells the story of the protagonist Less begins a global trip to escape the wedding of his predecessor. The protagonist tries to escape from reality through traveling, who also rethinks and builds new views upon love, career and his own identity. The two narrative lines are reality and reminiscence, the text may be disordered but there are also echo of the plots, which needs translator to pay more attention and combines theory to deal with it.Thus, this report will combine the descriptive translation, and adopt translation process analysis method to analyze the translation from the choosing of translation strategy, cultural orientation and the context. The study of descriptive translation aims at the target text rather than the source text, and it puts forward the “hypothetical translation”,based on the target culture, all the words existing in the target culture can be assumed as translations.According to this theory, researchers need to analyze the source language and target language from the target language culture, and find out the translation specifications lurking in it,so as to apply to the future translation.Descriptive translation theory does not simply specify what the norms of translation are,but from the microscopic point of view to analyze the translation of specific translation behavior to obtain a certain standard, with a strong inclusiveness, which is suitable to adopt it into the analysis and research of case study in translation. This report is divided into four chapters.Chapter one is the brief introduction about this translation project from its source and meaning.Chapter two is mainly about the translation process, which contains four parts: the preparations before the translation, the theory introduction, the translation practice and the check after translation.Chapter three focuses on the discussion of typical cases. The author analyzes the translation from the aspect of internal habitus, the context and translation criticism, and describes how the internal habitus and social culture background influences the translation in detail.Chapter four summarizes the translation project. The descriptive translation studies are based on the summary of a large amount of translation practices to find out the general characters and laws of translation. The author summarizes the experiences about this translation project, and provides some suggestions on the translation of novels from the aspects of character analysis and understanding of the plot.
