This is a translation report on the first chapter of Culture and Art in Sichuan Tibetan Area. This chapter is involved in the literature in Sichuan Tibetan Area.Literature in Sichuan Tibetan area is an integral and special part of Tibetan Literature. The translation project contributes to the dissemination of Sichuan Tibetan literature with the guidance of the Strategy of Going Global. The translator has found that there are a variety of names of people such as foreign Tibetologists,Tibetan men of letters in modern or even earlier time, characters in literature works, contemporary Tibetan peers, etc. In the translation project, there are two biggest difficulties: one is the proper translation of names of people and the other is the translation of culture-loaded words. The two difficulties are to be solved under the guidance of Communication. And translation is expounded from the perspective of Communication: translation is a process of message communication. In the process of communication,it's the target audience's needs and expectations that a translator takes into account.Target audiences of the translation project are circled as scholars who are interested in Tibetan culture.A translator as a communicator and gatekeeper in the process should consider what the needs and expectations of target audience are.The version is a medium in the process of communication, and the accuracy of message and translation's affordance with certain translation norms are what the target audience needs and expects. When the translator selects a better name of a person or culture-loaded word from several candidates in English,it's necessary to take time to search for the conventional or the widely used one in English world, which will guarantee a word's accuracy and its' accordance with norms in translation. Moreover,a Chinese translator interested in the Tibetan culture has his/her duties to disseminate the unique culture to the English world. To a certain degree,Tibetan names reflect the splendid Tibetan Culture. In terms of the translation of names of people,Tibetan features should be maintained in terms of translation of Tibetan names.Word-for-word Latin transliteration contributes to maintenance of the Tibetan features and it provides convenience for scholars to do further research.Annotation is used for explanation for the cultural connotation of names of people when it's necessary. In terms of the translation of culture-loaded words, sufficient cultural messages should be showed in a counterpart of a culture-loaded word.As a consequence, the method of transplantation is used by the translator. However, translation is a cross-cultural process of message communication. The structure of cognizance of the Chinese audience is much different from that of the target audience, who will not understand those words' meanings when transplantation is used simply. Therefore, the translator has adopted the translation technique of annotation to facilitate their reading, renew the cognizance structure of the target audience, and therefore they have more knowledge about Tibetan culture. In a word, transplantation + annotation as a mainly method is used for the translation of the culture-loaded words. The translation report consists of four parts, namely the introduction of the project, the translation process description and the two biggest difficulties and solutions, and the conclusion.Chapter one is involved in the background, significance and requirements of the translation project.Chapter two is on the description of the three phrases: pre-translation,while-translation,post-translation.And the third chapter, the main part of the report, focuses on the two difficulties, namely names of people and culture-loaded words, and the solutions to them from the perspective of communication.
