This translation practice is excerpted from a collection of short stories by Ruben Palma,The Trail We Leave. This fiction is called Carlos and Charlotte which focuses on dramatic emotional entanglements between two couples. It is a meta-fiction in which the author reveals how he arranges the plot.It seems that it is a love story, but it reflects the author's life. The author was exiled from Chile to Denmark and suffered an identity crisis in the days of Denmark,so he felt perplexed and helpless about the real life. The report consists of four parts. The first part is an introduction, including a task introduction,a brief introduction to author and theoretical basis as well as the significance of the translation task. The second part describes the translation process, including pre-translation preparations,a formulation of translation plan and a research on author and the source text. The third part is a case study.Under the guidance of relevance theory, the translator analyzes the way to reason out the context, achieve the coherence and the optimal relevance between the source text and the target text and realize the resonance of the translator and the author. The fourth part is a conclusion which includes the translator's major findings and limitations as well as suggestions for future researches.
