T.S.Eliot is famous in British and American literature who is known as the leader of modernist poetry.The Waste Land is Eliot's classic work.Numerous versions can be found in different languages.In China,there are more than 10 translated versions.In the studies of these versions,the translator is rarely used as a subject for comparative research.Therefore,this thesis attempts to focus on translator subjectivity in which there are three Chinese versions of The Waste Land.The aim is to clarify the important role of the translator in literary translation,and to broaden the comparative study of poetry translation.This thesis first summarizes the research institution of the translation of The Waste Land.It makes an analysis on the research perspective of the translation in chronological order,and demonstrates the comparative analysis of the translator subjectivity in each version afterwards.Secondly,this thesis demonstrates the cultural background and knowledge system of the translators of the three Chinese versions,and lays a foundation for analyzing the role of the translator subjectivity in translation.Thirdly,in the main part,the thesis analyzes the translator's subjective initiative in translation with examples and data,and analyzes the relationship between the translator,the reader and the author.In the main specific translation activities,the thesis analyzes the role of translator subjectivity in adding notes and choosing translation strategies.It also compares the individual misunderstandings in the three versions to present the translator subjectivity in different aspects.Finally,the thesis concludes that the translator subjectivity plays an active role in the translation process,affirming the translator's status,and broadening the path of comparative study of literary works,especially poetry translation.The thesis demonstrates the translator subjectivity in the three Chinese versions of The Waste Land,and hopes to highlight the translator's role in literary translation,whose aim is to affirm his or her creativity,and contribute to the comparative study of the translation.
