Faulkner created a series of novels and short stories based on the Yoknapatawpha County which are termed Yoknapatawpha genealogy.Among them The Sound and the Fury,Light in August and Absalom,Absalom! are the representatives which have expressed his literary thoughts comprehensively. With the application of Frye's theory, this thesis purports to analyze the appropriations and displacements of Biblical archetypes in Faulkner's three novels. In doing so,this paper argues that Faulkner consciously constructed a Biblical system in Yoknapatawpha series so as to inquire into Faulkner's insights into human destiny. The introduction is composed of three parts, including the research background, literature review and theoretical foundation. In chapter one,Anti-Eden Hero, the appropriations and displacements of Eden Heroes, were expounded based on three characters by their different characteristics;in chapter two, after stating Frye's viewpoint of the U-shaped structure in his masterpiece The Great Code: The Bible and Literature, the author elaborated three deformed U-shaped structures combing with the story lines of several characters;according to their distinct functions of the images which occurred repeatedly in these three novels, chapter three mainly explained the appropriations and displacements of these images. At last, the conclusion was drawn that being influenced by his Christian family and the Southern Society,Faulkner's literary creation has combined his religious consciousness and the pessimism in Southern Society, which reflects his great insights into human destiny.
