A Study On Chinese Reduplication In 17-19th Western Sinology

As an important grammatical means,reduplication is widely used in the world language,and it is more common in Chinese,which plays an important role in the formation of Chinese words.Meanwhile,as an important grammar points in Chinese language,the study of Chinese reduplication also performed under the main grammatical structure in the west,the current research results in the very great degree is in European languages framework,and the knowledge for Chinese reduplication with a western view.Based on the grammatical works of European sinology during the 17th to 19th centuries,this paper selects ten representative works of classical sinology as the main sources of literature.This paper sums up the understanding of Chinese reduplication by European sinologists.The author describes the expressions in sinology grammar books and use comparative study to find the diachronic changes in Chinese reduplication in 17th to 19th European sinology books.Combined with modern Chinese exiting research results and we can find as follows:1)In the 17th and 19th centuries,sinologists generally recognized the importance of reduplication in Chinese word-formation,and they made a detailed introduction to the forms,lexical classifications and grammatical functions of Chinese reduplicated words.2)Sinologist at 17th to 19th century,with the influence of native language grammar categories,described amount of Chinese reduplication in quantitative category,momentum category and metric category.Although Sinologists did not describe the grammar characteristic of Chinese reduplication systematically,their different opinions in different framework of syntax descriptions are beneficial to our research.In this paper,we will summarize the unique expression of Chinese reduplication in lexical level in combination with the comparision in cross-language.3)The grammar works in 17th to 19th century of sinology knew little about Chinese reduplication in syntactic features directly.But based on the relevant conclusions of modern Chinese,we can draw some conclusions about Chinese reduplication characteristics from phrase structure,topic structure,"A-not-A" question sstructure and verb-copy construction in sinology works.Reduplication in the end,as a kind of widely used in Chinese grammar,it is in use process of "class"change worthy of our attentions,based on the perspective of European sinology explore Chinese reduplication characteristics and with the help of background of typology are the differences between Chinese and other language,combining with the characteristics of both obtained the Chinese reduplication.The autor hope the conculsion could do some help in the reduplication when it is in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
