| The prevailing readability formula mainly focuses on the variables on the superficial level of language and measures the difficulty of text according to the number of characters,words and sentences,which lacks the exploration of the underlying factors affecting readability.Because the calculation of language difficulty remains to be explored and researched,this paper proposes the complexity level distribution studying the complex sentence relation to determine whether complex sentences with different relations have different degrees of difficulty through the complexity level distribution in grade levels of typical Chinese textbooks,which provides new measurable indicators for readability research.According to Xing Fuyi’s Theory of Complex Sentence,firstiy,this paper fully investigates the level distribution of existing typical complex sentences and the corresponding complex sentence types in terms of different grades.Secondly,for the so-called "intertwining sentence," namely,the "atypical complex sentence" in the text(3591 cases),this paper obtains 2456 run-on sentences that account for 70%after classification analysis and divide them into object description combination mode,multi-object combination mode and predicate combination mode according to the combination modes of sentences and paragraphs based on the previous research results.After selecting 301 texts in PEP Chinese textbooks of primary school as the research corpus,a corpus of sentence categories and complex sentences including 8421 sentences with 16 marked items is established.Based on the comparative analysis of these data,this paper draws the following conclusions:First,there are differences in type and level distribution of typical complex sentences.In terms of type distribution,there are more causal and coordinating relations and less transitional relations.In terms of level distribution,the number of causal complex sentences is negatively correlated with grade while the number of transitional and coordinating complex sentences is positively correlated with grade.Objective sentence,deductive sentence,choice sentence and false-transitional sentence are only studied by senior students,which shows differences in the difficulty of complex sentences and also verifies the Cognitive Development Theory in psychology.According to the characteristics of level distribution,this paper divides typical complex sentences into complex sentences that can be used as the standard for readability recognition and complex sentences that cannot be used as the standard for readability recognition.In the complex sentences that can be used as the standard for readability recognition,this paper determines the complex sentence relations corresponding to the primary,intermediate and advanced texts,and gives the level table of complex sentence relations and complexity to judge the text readability.Second,the relational mark is the significant form to judge the complex sentences,and there are significant differences in type distribution of relational marks.Transitional complex sentence,progressive sentence and choice sentence in coordinating sentences,conditional sentence,hypothetical sentence and deductive sentence in cause complex sentence all belong to strongly-correlated complex sentence,namely,all of these complex sentences need relational markers to mark the relations.Related to weak relational mark,other sentences less depend on relational marks and mainly have no mark. |
