The “production-oriented approach”(POA),which consists of three teaching procedures:motivating,enabling and assessing,was put forward by Professor Wen Qiufang.This approach was originally proposed for the problem of “learning-using separation” in Chinese college English teaching,but this phenomenon not only occurs in universities,but also exists in senior high schools.Some studies have already been conducted in universities students,but there were few studies on high school students.Therefore,the author decides to explore the effectiveness of POA in high school English teaching,especially the writing teaching.In this thesis,the author tries to solve two research questions: 1)Will students' writing scores be improved after the application of POA? 2)What are students' attitudes toward POA in English writing?In order to solve these two questions,the author conducted a study of POA in senior high school English writing teaching.Class five,grade one in Qin'an No.2 High School was chosen as the experimental class,and students were taught under the guidance of POA.While class six,grade one was chosen as the control class,and students were taught with the product approach.During the process of the research,the author applied three research instruments and eight-week's class experiment,which included five writing tasks.Three research instruments include two writing tests,an interview and two questionnaires.The writing tests and questionnaires were conducted before and after the experiment: the pre-test was used to test whether there were significant differences of English writing scores between the EC and the CC;the post-test was used to explore whether students' writing scores have been improved under the guidance of POA.The purpose of two questionnaires was to learn students' attitudes toward POA in English writing in EC.At the same time,a teaching case was also presented to illustrate teaching procedures of POA in English writing teaching in this thesis.At the end of the experiment,the author chose ten students from EC randomly and carried out an interview to learn actual effects of POA in English writing.After the final collection of experimental results,the statistical analysis was carried out by SPSS18.0.The results of the study confirm that POA does improve students' English writing scores.Moreover,students' attitudes toward POA are positive and most of them agree that POA is helpful to their English writing.
