Chinese martial arts fictions,as one of the most influential and widely read literary genres in the history of Chinese literature, are deeply loved by all walks of life for their unique styles and narrative forms.Because of this,Jin Yong's martial arts novels have attracted great attention from the translation field. His works have been translated into Korean,Thai,English,Japanese and other languages, and have been widely spread around the world. As one of the most representative works of Jin Yong's martial arts fictions,Legends of the Condor Heroes has aroused great interests from readers as soon as it was published. The underlying reason is that Jin Yong's martial arts novels provide readers with a platform for direct contact with Chinese martial arts culture.Taking the English version of Jin Yong's Legends of the Condor Heroes translated by Anna Holmwood in 2018 as an example, this thesis explores the problems and challenges faced in the novel's translation of terms of Chinese martial arts culture. In Jin Yong's martial arts fictions, the names, pseudonyms and martial arts moves of the characters run through the whole novel and occupy an indelible position. These characters' names, pseudonyms and martial arts moves have deeper cultural connotations than their surface meanings. These cultural connotations are a key to the comprehensive understanding of Jin Yong's series of martial arts novels, and they are particularly important in translation. However,up to now,few scholars have studied the English versions of Jin Yong's martial arts fictions, and even fewer scholars have studied the English translation of character' names, pseudonyms and martial arts moves in Jin Yong's martial arts fictions.Based on the theories of semantic translation and communicative translation, this thesis takes Legends of the Condor Heroes as the research text to analyze the translation strategies chosen by Anna Holmwood in the translation of martial arts moves, characters' names and pseudonyms. This thesis finds that Anna Holmwood,on the basis of retaining the original meaning, adopts the method of classified translation according to the characteristics of the naming of martial arts moves. As for the translation of characters' names and pseudonyms,Anna Holmwood translates some of them according to their personality and appearance characteristics. These translations not only accurately convey the meaning of characters' pseudonyms, but also convey cultural embodiment contained in vocabulary. However, due to the differences between Chinese and foreign cultures, the choice of Holmwood's translation strategies and the inadequate cross-cultural understanding of her lead to cultural losses in the process of her translation.Nevertheless,Holmwood's English version tries to retain the Chinese characteristics of the original novel to a large extent and has important guiding significance for the translation of other books in terms of martial arts moves, names and pseudonyms of characters in the future.
